Frank Benin
PhD Student
Frank Milebasua Benin is a Research Assistant with the Construction Safety Research Alliance (CSRA) at the University of Colorado Boulder. He holds an MSc in Civil Engineering with Distinction from Brunel University London and a BSc in Civil Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana.
Frank’s MSc thesis focused on Environmental Risk Assessment of Failures on Tailings Dams, where he utilized advanced methodologies such as FLAC 2D modeling, Monte Carlo simulations, and fragility curve development. His research aimed to improve environmental sustainability, reduce risks, and prevent fatalities in the construction industry.
Frank contributes to the Energy-Based Risk Assessment (EBRA) research initiative at CSRA. This project explores the interaction between energy sources, safety controls, and human factors to improve the understanding of construction safety risks. Frank is helping to develop innovative, data-driven strategies to improve decision-making during project planning and design to prevent serious injuries and fatalities on construction sites.
Frank brings over five years of professional experience in Ghana and the UK, during which he has contributed to multiple infrastructure projects. These include the construction of tailings storage facilities, road and drainage systems, large-scale buildings, embankment structures, and prefabricated steel installations, among other infrastructure projects. His areas of expertise are project management, quality assurance and control, and construction safety. He has delivered projects that exceed strict performance and safety standards.
He is committed to improving safety across the global construction industry, especially in developing regions like Ghana.
